Functional Medicine focuses on the optimal functioning of the entire body rather than targeting individual symptoms. Genetics, environmental and lifestyle choices are primary drivers of chronic disease. Patients and practitioners work together to address the underlying causes of disease, using a personalized, systems-oriented approach, then work together to implement solutions to those underlying causes.
Dr. Powers focuses on helping young people struggling with thyroid problems, growth and weight issues, diabetes, hypoglycemia, and menstrual cycle abnormalities. Her approach is to restore these systems through a combination of diet and lifestyle changes, targeted supplements, and medication when appropriate. Her specialty is pediatric endocrinology, but she does also see adults with these problems.
Results vary by each person. Some people feel dramatic improvement within the first month, others may take a bit longer. Our standard programs are for a minimum of 6 months. Remember, your body didn’t fail overnight. Years of stress and illness take their toll and it takes a proper amount of time to restore. On average, it takes one month of repair for each year you’ve suffered from a specific problem.
As of Sept 1, 2015, Dr. Powers’ practice is legally separate from Medical Associates of Central Virginia, although she still practices in the same building. Her business is Whole Health Catalysts, P.C.

Dr. Powers offers a variety of lab testing, from conventional labs to state of the art functional medicine testing. Please read below about the different types of lab testing we offer.
Conventional Lab Testing: Submit through your Insurance
- Conventional labs are those that you are likely already familiar with. These are the labs such as thyroid testing, vitamin D and cholesterol, to name a few. Dr. Powers is different from your conventional doctor in that she often orders more lab tests. She interprets them differently from how a conventional doctor might. Dr. Powers listens to your symptoms while looking at optimal levels rather than normal ranges.
- You may have these drawn and your primary care practitioner’s office or at the Centra Lab, or any other reference lab facility such as LabCorp. As Dr. Powers is not an employee of Medical Associates, she cannot order tests to be done at their lab.
Functional Medicine Lab Testing:
- Our practice uses high-quality, cutting-edge functional lab tests in order to get the most accurate information about how your body is working and to uncover the root cause of your illness. These tests may or may not be covered by your insurance company. Therefore we have you pay our office for the labs and we pay the lab company directly on your behalf. At check out, we will provide you with the necessary paper work and codes in order for you to file for reimbursement from your insurance provider. You may also use funds from a Health Savings Account (HSA) to cover the costs of these tests.
- Functional medicine blood tests require an appointment at Medical Associates. This is to minimize your waiting time at the office.
- Medical Associates charges a fee for blood draws and sample handling for these functional medicine test panels. The initial kit is $25, and each kit after that is $10 each. This fee is due at the time of the lab draw.
To learn more about the functional medicine testing kits and the companies that perform these analyses, please visit the manufacturers’ websites below.

Our authorized laboratories are only able to sell test kits to licensed practitioners. Dr. Powers uses specific lab tests from small lab companies that exclusively offer functional medicine tests. For labs that are conventional, such as thyroid panels, your own doctor can order them, although the specific tests Dr. Powers orders may differ. Check with Dr. Powers if you have questions.
For blood testing, fasting labs are scheduled early in the morning and non-fasting labs throughout the day. Lab appointments are needed to minimize your waiting time.
Generally I will have all results back by 2-4 weeks after the laboratories receive your samples.
Yes! Dr. Powers uses Allscripts, an electronic medical record. You will be able to set up an account to access your records and results via MyHealth, a secure patient portal. Just ask one of our staff to email you an invitation to join.
Dr. Powers will review results with you at the lab review appointment. Our goal is for you to understand what these results mean and how they impact the personalized treatment plan Dr. Powers designs for you.
Costs and Insurance
Dr. Powers does not accept any form of medical insurance or Medicare/Medicaid. However, we will provide you with an itemized bill with traditional ICD-9 and ICD-10codes and CPT codes so that you may file a claim with your insurance company yourself.
To simplify the process, we recommend calling your insurance company prior to your visit to find out about what your specific plan will cover. Insurance plans will consider her an out-of-network provider. We’re more than happy to provide diagnosis and procedure codes. Since Dr. Powers is a Medical Doctor, we find that most patients are reimbursed for a portion of their visits.
Dr. Powers charges $450 per hour. All consultations will be billed for the actual time used, and prorated accordingly. If you have extensive medical records to review, there may be an additional fee.
Depending on the lab test, the cost is generally between $125-400 per lab kit. You can always start a program just by ordering a single test. Some of the food sensitivity or autoimmune panelshave a higher cost.
Methods of payment are: cash, personal check, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover.
Payment is due at time of consultation. If paying by credit card, we require the card number be on file with our office prior to the consultation. Checks are accepted if received prior to the first consult, and will be accepted for subsequent visits.
We will provide you a superbill that lists traditional ICD-9 diagnosis codes and CPT codes that you may submit to your insurance company. Most insurance companies will not reimburse for supplements. The office staff will not submit your bills to your insurance company for reimbursement. Please note that we cannot guarantee reimbursement.
Check with your insurer in advance for their policies on out-of-network providers
Dr. Powers carries her own line of high quality supplements which have been formulated to achieve the best results in the right specified dosages. If you want to do your own research on different supplements, we welcome you to do so but we do not provide any other recommendations nor advise on other specific blends or brands. If you purchase other supplements from other manufacturers, please research carefully. Not all ingredients are equal.
Dr. Powers carries a number of supplements in her office, and uses a HIPAA-compliant secure online dispensary called HealthWaveHQ for items she does not keep in stock. HealthWaveHQ will generally deliver products within 24 hours of order, excluding weekends and holidays.
Dr. Powers accepts check, cash, or credit cards (MasterCard and Visa), payable when you pick them up.
